In this course we will read selections of Japanese literature that provide a window into the social, political, and cultural life of twentieth-century Japan. Besides introducing various Japanese authors and their outstanding works, we will discuss relevant topics such as the status of women, changes in religious attitudes, perceptions of homosexuality, and Japan's evolution in the post-World War II period.
