The Spanish BA program provides two concentrations: Spanish Literature and Spanish/English English/Spanish Translation and Interpretation.

The Spanish Literature concentration offers a well-rounded knowledge of the language and cultures of Spain and Latin America and teaches how to establish connections between literary works and their cultural/historical traditions. Students are trained to think critically, articulate ideas intelligently both orally and in writing, and understand the world from a variety of perspectives. From Cervantes and Rosa Montero in Spain to Sor Juana and García Márquez in Latin America; from film to poetry and fiction, we explore the crossroads of literature, history, and culture in the Hispanic world and beyond.

The English/Spanish Translation and Interpretation concentration is designed to prepare students for a wide range of careers in the field. The curriculum integrates foundational studies in Spanish language, literature, and civilization with practical training in both translation and interpretation. The curriculum also integrates a course in translation tools and technology as well as one in professionalization topics for translators and interpreters, ensuring graduates are equipped with the necessary skills for success in the modern professional environment. Students have the option to graduate with departmental honors through an intensive internship experience and gain practical exposure to translation and/or interpretation in professional settings.

Students must demonstrate proficiency in Spanish by completing the sequence of courses SPAN 10100, 10200, 20100, 20200. Alternatively, students can complete the intensive sequence SPAN 10300 and 20300. Heritage speakers of Spanish can fulfill this requirement through completion of SPAN 10500, 10600, 20700, 20800. Students who demonstrate proficiency in Spanish through a placement exam may be exempted from some courses.

P/NC Policy: Only a letter grade (A, B, C, D, including + or -) will be accepted by the department in the required courses for the Spanish major. Students cannot receive a grade of P/NC in any course used for the major.
